This has always been a secret of mine but I did name my stoma. To be honest I don't know why I never told anyone until now. I named my stoma when I was still in hospital after my original stoma surgery.
The name of my stoma is Mairead. Yes I know it’s a girl’s name but here is the story behind the name of my stoma!
After spending a few nights in the high dependency unit I was being moved to a surgical ward in my hospital. After having one nurse look after me 24/7 I was really worried about moving to a ward were I wouldn't get care. When I was moved to the ward it was night time and the nurses were changing over shifts, so the night nurse came in to the room to start her shift. Mairead the nurse came over to me and introduced herself, she was really nice and friendly. Later on in the night I was really sick and Mairead looked after me extremely well. I can still remember when I was getting sick Mairead running in and out of the room getting me all the different things I needed when I was getting sick. She looked after me really well. A few days later my stoma nurse gave me the idea of naming my stoma.
So after Mairead working so hard to look after me I named it after her.
