I have experimented a lot with clothing over the past 7 years that I’ve had my ostomy. At first, I would only wear baggy clothes, which is very different from what I would wear pre-surgery. I was very concerned that people would be able to see my ostomy through my clothes (but they cannot!).
I find that pattern and shirts with texture (ruffles, ruching, etc) hide the pouch much better. The pattern distracts the eye if it’s full and the extra material also helps to hide it. Jeans have been more of a struggle for me. I’ve always worn fitted jeans and didn’t want to give that up. I just recently discovered Pacsun (Pacific Sunwear) jeans. I haven’t worn this company since I was in junior high but let me tell you, they are my favorite jeans. They make a high waisted and very high waisted jean. They are a little pricier than I would like (about $50/pair). I hit a great sale one day and bought 4 pairs for $100. Jackpot! They go an inch or so higher than my belly button which is about where the top of my pouch is. They have pockets in front as well which help to hide my pouch when it’s full. They are stretchy, comfortable, and very flattering. I’m pretty thin with little hips/butt and they give me a nice little something in the back!
Finding something that works with you and your ostomy may take time. Once I find something I like that works, I wear it all the time and buy multiple of it. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing no matter what it is!
Hi Caitlin, Thanks for the recommendation on the jeans. The pictures on the models seem to be below the belly button. I have had trouble finding jeans which I lived in prior to surgery. My solution is maternity jeans, the best skinny ones are H&M. The only downfall is you can't tuck a shirt in.
