Going back to work was a challenge. My illness progressed before surgery and my colleagues and clients were starting to notice. After surgery, I explained it to my colleagues (1. I had been out of work for over 2 months; 2. I had lost more than 30lbs). My colleagues and supervisors were very understanding and accommodating. For the first few weeks, I only worked 4 hours a day and worked my way back to working fulltime. I’ve had two other jobs since then (one of which I am currently at) and I have not told my employers. Some of my colleagues are aware of it. Some have seen my articles and some I have told. I work in a hospital so most everyone I work with know what an ostomy is. It’s helpful to have nurses and doctors as friends in case anything were to happen while I was at work.
