This will definitely vary from person to person. I was very ill prior to my initial surgery (I’ve had eight) so my recovery was very challenging. I had been in the hospital for a month prior to the option of surgery. After my surgery, I was in the hospital for maybe a week. I had home health nurses coming out to take care of my ostomy and my infected surgical incision. The first few weeks were rough. I was out of work for almost a month after my first surgery and then about 2-3 weeks after my others. While at home, I needed assistance getting dressed and had to use a shower chair while bathing (I was 22 at the time!). I spent a lot of time sleeping and watching television. Luckily, I lived with my parents at the time (one being retired) so I always had someone around and my dad would take me on drives just so I could get fresh air. Eventually, we would take mini walks. I remember the first time, I made it to the mailbox and that was it for me. Family and friend support is key after any surgery and they were my lifesavers.
