We Ostomates have to be a little careful with what we eat and drink, but there should be no reason why we cannot have a rich and varied diet.
By the very nature of our condition, output is “normally” watery, so we want to avoid, or moderate anything likely to make things worse.
For me, this is “cheese spread”, or “walnuts”. If I eat much of these, I am forever emptying…… on the other side, chicken is absorbed better for me meaning there is a fair chance I may actually sleep through the night.
As Ostomists, we suffer from dehydration much easier than “normal” people. Alcohol acts as a diuretic which will encourage you to lose even more fluids. Drinking alcohol is fine, but in moderation. Drinking too much will make yourself very ill with a (worst case) hospital trip to replace lost fluids.
So, what is good for us to eat, and what is best to avoid?
Foods that can cause excess wind
Foods that may cause watery output
Foods that can thicken output
Foods that can cause nasty smells
Foods that can help control smells
Foods that may pass through undigested
Potassium and SodiumThese two minerals are lost every day with your output – you can help replace these by eating one of the following foods that are high in potassium…..
and these are high in Sodium …..
The main thing is that all this is trial and error – everyone is different, and some people have higher tolerances than others. Also, you must remember to chew your food well, so that is broken down into smaller pieces. This helps the digestion and allows your body to absorb as much goodness as is possible.
