Has anyone had the confidence to try out an extreme sport since recovering fully from their ostomy surgery? Would love to hear about your experience in the comments.
Yeah, I took up snowboarding after recovering from ostomy surgery, I still snowboard and last winter went splitboarding for the first time off piste to a really remote area. It was a fantastic experience…
Hi not sure if it’s classed as extreme but I compete in the equine sport of endurance riding at international/British squad level. I ride up to 160km in a day. This weekend I have 121km in Saturday and…

Yeah, I took up snowboarding after recovering from ostomy surgery, I still snowboard and last winter went splitboarding for the first time off piste to a really remote area. It was a fantastic experience. I also learnt to scuba dive progressing through the PADI courses to Advanced level. I fancied myself as a windsurfer too but never realised that ambition. Not because I had an ostomy, I was just rubbish at it.
Hi not sure if it’s classed as extreme but I compete in the equine sport of endurance riding at international/British squad level. I ride up to 160km in a day. This weekend I have 121km in Saturday and 121km on Sunday. I’m having awful problems with my stoma at the present time as cannot get a seal at all and have leaks on a daily basis due to the stoma being very retracted. I’ve now tried everything the stoma nurses can offer me. I have two final bags to try this weekend. I’m however going to see Ian Daniels who is president of the colostomy association on Wednesday as he specialises in problem stomas and works for the Local nhs trust that I work for.
Wow, that is truly amazing! It certainly sounds like having a stoma has not curtailed your sporting ambitions. Well done:-)
Hi Kirsty, thank you so much for sharing your story. I would absolutely categorise this as an extreme type of sporting activity and totally admire your resilience. I'm so sorry to hear about your ongoing stoma related issues and really hope things resolve for you soon. Kindest Marie
How did you get on with your leak issues and with the endurance rides at the weekend?
